Like others here, Tales of the City is just a title to me; something I had read about but either didn't air locally or - wait, it was on TV in the 90s? My kids were small and didn't watch much that wasn't animated in those days. Time for some catch-up.Caftan Womanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05936895555808823221noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5739955.post-32579264391468626482018-09-23T04:25:45.575-07:002018-09-23T04:25:45.575-07:00Bill - I think you are going to love the series; i...Bill - I think you are going to love the series; it is one of the rare adaptations that are just as entertaining as the books.
I do recommend the entire series of books by Maupin, though for even more of the interior life and history of all these rich characters. I first saw the series, then started reading the books.
Enjoy--let me know your thoughts about them!
Thanks as always angelman66https://www.blogger.com/profile/16471674180789592940noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5739955.post-5656776990180908672018-09-23T04:23:20.035-07:002018-09-23T04:23:20.035-07:00Quiggy - yup, the same Bob Mackie who designed for...Quiggy - yup, the same Bob Mackie who designed for Cher and Carol Burnett- one of his only acting roles.
And to answer your second question, the mustaches start to appear more prominently in the second series, More Tales--and Mouse is played by a different actor who is dark haired with a classic 70s 'stache...
-Cangelman66https://www.blogger.com/profile/16471674180789592940noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5739955.post-24421584109760443732018-09-22T21:36:02.643-07:002018-09-22T21:36:02.643-07:00I remember reading the first book many many moons ...I remember reading the first book many many moons ago, and enjoying it (I think), but I never caught up with the later books, and the TV series is completely unknown to me. I don't remember if I even remember it (now that's a sentence!). Seems to me if it was on PBS I would have wanted to watch it, but I'm just drawing a blank -- maybe it was before I had a VCR and there was somethingWilliamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03053290865549099074noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5739955.post-1086294470704081742018-09-22T15:45:52.393-07:002018-09-22T15:45:52.393-07:00I just reread this. Where are the characters with the porn star mustaches? (Or is that a little too late by the timeline?) Didn't notice any in the pictures you posted...Quiggyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12434473473185065992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5739955.post-89620129792247799072018-09-22T13:06:13.068-07:002018-09-22T13:06:13.068-07:00You will LOVE this then, Quiggy, guaranteed. This ...You will LOVE this then, Quiggy, guaranteed. This is the TV miniseries as art, before-its-time television at its very best. Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis and cast are unforgettable! I am so glad I have finally had a chance to write about this masterpiece of a series.

Thanks for hosting this fabulously-themed blogathon. (I was born in 1961, so most of the 70's I lived a child and teenager; too young to really be aware of my surroundings.) My library has the series on DVD. I'll put it on my list after I get through with the ones I already have checked outQuiggyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12434473473185065992noreply@blogger.com
